Last updated 9 September 2026 ยท Applies to the WhyReel Android app (com.whyreel.app)
WhyReel takes a short video you share with it โ a Reel link, or text โ and explains what it says. This policy describes exactly what we collect, why, where it goes, and how to delete it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate.
WhyReel ("we", "us") operates the WhyReel mobile application. For any privacy question, or to request deletion of your data, contact us at the email address in the Contact section below.
| Data | Why we collect it |
|---|---|
| Account identifier Google account (name, email, profile photo) or phone number |
To create your account, keep your analyses private to you, and let you sign back in on another device. Sign-in is required โ there is no guest mode. |
| Content you submit Reel links, shared text, and the video retrieved from a link |
To produce the analysis you asked for, and to let you replay the reel inside the app afterwards. |
| Analysis results Summaries, transcripts, translations, and your follow-up questions |
So your saved library persists and you can reopen past analyses. |
| Crash diagnostics Stack traces, device model, OS version, app version |
To find and fix crashes. Collected by Firebase Crashlytics in released builds only. |
We do not collect your contacts, location, calendar, photos (beyond a reel you explicitly share), microphone or camera input, or your browsing activity in other apps.
WhyReel does not have access to your Instagram account, password, private messages, or any content that is not publicly accessible. The app only processes a link or file that you deliberately share with it.
All analysis happens on our servers, not on your device. When you share a reel:
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for advertising. We use these service providers, each of which processes data only to deliver their part of the service:
| Provider | What it handles |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Storage, Functions, Crashlytics) |
Account sign-in, storing your analyses and reels, running the backend, crash reports |
| Google Gemini API | Generating the analysis, transcript, translations and follow-up answers |
| Google Play Services | Google sign-in and SMS verification for phone sign-in |
We may also disclose data if required by law, or to protect the safety and rights of our users.
Data is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure in the United States
(us-central1). If you use WhyReel from outside the United States,
your data is transferred and processed there.
Analyses and stored reels are kept until you delete them or delete your account.
Deleting an analysis in the app removes the analysis and its results. Please note that the stored copy of the video may remain in our storage for a period afterwards before it is cleared.
Crash reports are retained by Firebase Crashlytics for up to 90 days.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, including the right to correct, restrict or object to processing. Contact us to exercise them.
WhyReel is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Your analyses are readable only by your own account, enforced by server-side security rules. Stored reels are kept in a private bucket and served through short-lived signed links rather than public URLs. Results are written only by our backend, never directly by the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we take these measures seriously.
WhyReel analyses videos that you choose to share. We do not own that content, and the rights in it remain with its original creators. WhyReel is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Instagram, Meta, TikTok, or any other platform.
If we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
